Getting a job with a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy on my credit?
I went through a divorce and got laid off from my job that I have had for five years. My ex left me a house I cannot pay for that is going into forclosure and never paid his half of our 30K credit card debt. I am going to file Chapter 7 BK.I currently have no way of paying this back. Since I work in the finance industry – particularly – auto finance underwriting, will employers not hire me because of the BK on my credit? I have kept all credit cards current so the only thing past due is my mortgage.
I know when I worked at Capital One, there were plenty of temps who could not get hired full time because they “could not pass the credit check”. Are they normally looking for fedral debts and tax liens?? Or are they going to say since I got stuck in a really bad situtation in a divorce that I cant work for them? Any ideas or anyone been in a similar situation?
Most jobs in the finance industry check credit, not all of them. I also filed bk after a divorce, worked in the credit field for years, over 12 years, yes, some companies check, while others could care less…depends on the company and who does check and who doesn’t. It’s a catch 22 situation. I’ve been honest on interviews and told them I had to voluntarily file and they didn’t care, my work experience prevailed, they will also look at what you are doing current to keep your bills paid. Most banks, won’t hire because of bad credit, but..you aren’t doomed because you are filing. I had a bk on my record for about 7 years, re-established my credit and was hired as a collector for one of our major credit reporting agencies, so there is life after bankruptcy. Divorce is one of the main reasons couples file bk, and lack of good judgement with finances, but…it does get better. Good luck in your search and hope this helps!
